Spiral Butterfly ~~ A Pagan and Earth Spirituality Book Club
Spiral Butterfly is more than just a book club. It is a place where you can discuss books of interest to Pagans and Earth Spirituality, buy books that spark your interest, suggest future club selections, and meet other like-minded people.
Spiral Butterfly is organized in such a way that you do not need to be out of the "broom closet" to participate; the name of the club does not contain overtly Pagan connotations, and through the Amazon.com link, your purchases (should you choose to make any) will come to you from Amazon.com instead of a Pagan shipper. Likewise, email list messages will be from "spiralbutterfly" rather than a distinctly Pagan address. The aim is to provide a safe place for ALL people to participate, regardless of personal circumstances. |
Selection of the Month: November
November's book selection is Out of the Shadows: Myths and Truths of Modern Wicca, by Lilith McLelland. (Citadel Press, 2002)
I've been waiting for a book like this to come out for quite some time. When I first started studying Wicca and Paganism in general, I had no idea how much misinformation was out there and what the Wiccan/Pagan community was all about. Out of the Shadows speaks to newcomers and old-timers alike in a very frank, honest way about many of the most common stories and situations that virtually every Wiccan/Pagan will come across at some point.
Yes, there is a lot of excellent information in this book, from how to deal with the IRS and become a tax-exempt organization, to legal rights, how to interact professionally with the media, and those oddballs that show up in every religion known to humankind. However, all of this information is presented with a huge dose of wit and wisdom. It's an easy yet educational read, and a book I have now placed in my top three books I will recommend to my students and newcomers who ask for suggested reading titles. I only wish I'd had this book when I was first starting -- I think it's much better to learn about this stuff before you get neck-deep in it. :)
